Military wife is military wife.
Recently I had the most riveting conversation with the hubs about... my choice of footwear:
But aiya, I actually needed the shoes to...
Fulfill my duties as the Internet's Military Wife at the RSAF Open House 2016!
(Ok, lousy photo cause you can't see my shoes lol but yes, on a bimbotic note I always end up having to buy new shoes when I go on my military expeditions haha. The last was when I went onboard the RSS Endurance and sailed the high seas lol.)
So anyway, back to the air force.
I attended the media preview of the #ROH16 themed Defending Our Skies, and seriously, I had such a good time I think I'll be back this weekend 21 - 22 May for the public days!
Also known as the air shows. I live fairly near Paya Lebar Air Base and I can tell you these guys have been training pretty hard lah. I haven't had a need to set my alarm for the past I don't know how many weeks cause they're always up and soaring way before I get up (and throughout the entire day). My 2 year-old nephew has since learnt how to "cover your ears" whenever he hears the planes lol.
The 30-minute demonstration features not just the F-15SG and F-16C fighter aircraft but also almost the full suite of our air force's capabilities such as the GBAD systems, Surface-to-air Python-5 and DERby (SPYDER) and Mechanised IGLA, AH-64D Apache attack helicopters and CH-47 Chinook helicopters.
(Ok, I didn't really understand all of that but to sound more pro, I shall throw in a few more jargon like “Fighter Scramble”, “Light Aircraft Interception”, “Ground-Based Air Defence” manoeuvres, and “Under-Slung” and “Close Air Support” operations in action.)
Pro enough not? But really, my advice is that you time your visit to make it there for the shows! They are held twice a day - at 10.30am and 2.30pm on Saturday, and at 11.30am and 4.30pm on Sunday.
Get upclose and personal with the various aircraft! (and military men hahahaha)
More than 20 types of aircraft and weapon systems will be on static display. These include the F-15SG and F-16D+ fighter aircraft, Chinook and Seahawk helicopters, Hermes 450 and Heron-1 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, and the Surface-to-air PYthon-5 and DERby (SPYDER) ground-based air defence systems with the static display pilots on duty to answer whatever questions you have.
Also, this is probably your only chance to do a Descendants of the Sun-esque shoot with bae.
Take one, fail.
Obviously this guy is not my husband cause the hubs was REALLY FLYING but if you want to check him out, he will be on duty this Sunday! (My husband lah, not this guy.)
Take more pictures of him and send me! There's almost no photo-taking restriction at the open house by the way.
And of course, a photo with his aircraft.
So bittersweet coming up close and personal with this chao ji mei zhou bao aka Super Puma... his pride and joy, my pride and sometimes anguish. (By the way, two years on and that post STILL gets circulated... in fact I was recently told it's been incorporated into the curriculum of the undergraduate programme at one of our local universities :scream:)
Military men on duty
Need I say any more?
The highlight of my visit was the 45-minute long joyride in the Fokker-50 aircraft where we got to see almost the ENTIRE skyline of Singapore (MBS looks EVEN more magnificent from above! And I felt such a rousing sense of patriotism as we admired our beautiful city from above) and even the Indonesian islands of Batam and Bintan. The RSAF actually allowed members of the public to e-ballot for aircraft ride tickets for a chance to fly on board either the C-130 Hercules transport, CH-47SD Chinook helicopter, Fokker-50 airliner or the Singapore Youth Flying Club’s DA40 light aircraft. Balloting has since closed BUT join them on their Facebook page for future cool opportunities. #shamelessplug
Also, other exciting stuff includes watching the Red Lions Parachute Team jump (they won't be at this year's NDP by the way - so this is your best and maybe only time to catch them) and seeing the SAF Military Working Dog Unit at work! There's also a Carnival Zone and other activities for the kids such as the uniform photo booth where visitors can also take a souvenir photo of themselves in the pilot flight suits or other RSAF uniforms.
