Finally tried this popular tearoom that's frankly more misses than hits.
Today I finally checked out the coveted Angelina Tea Room that has arrived on our Singapore shores. For the uninitiated, this Parisian tearoom has been around for more than a century and is extremely well-known for their hot chocolate and pastries (my mother-in-law, till today, can't stop raving about the Mont Blanc she had in Paris on her honeymoon.)
We reached at 1230pm on a Saturday expecting to queue but thankfully, we managed to get a table very quickly.
And that's where the compliments end.
We had the Angelina brunch set ($33) that came with a whole bunch of bread and pastries that frankly, was wayyyy too much carbs that weren't worth the calories :unamused: Our croissants were served cold but our server very kindly warmed them up for us. As for their trademark Mont Blanc, we each took one mouth and left the rest of our $13.50 untouched. All I could taste was SUGAR - like sugar in it's raw form - I didn't like it one bit and that's coming from someone with a whole mouth of sweet teeth.
The hot chocolate ($12) was good for the first mouthful but it gets too cloying at the end.
Perhaps the only redeeming factor was that the pâtisserie's set in the newly-revamped Capitol Piazza (which is very sleek and pretty!) and the portions are big enough to share. Plus, the fact that I was sharing all that sugar with a good friend - we actually had a good time laughing and lamenting about the unjustified damage to our waistlines.
It was a glorious afternoon with a girl friend, but unfortunately it could have been way better.
