Our day trip to Jiufen (九份)!
This was the favourite part of our entire Taiwan trip!
If you watch Spirited Away, you'll probably know that this mountainous area of Jiufen, situated just 30 kilometres from Taipei, is where creator Hayao Miyazaki drew much of his inspiration for Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away.
(Confession, I have never watched the film but my travel companion is a huge fan and in turn, made me very excited! Haha)
Jiufen is easily accessed from Taipei - there's a direct bus #1062 from Zhongxiao Fuxing Station and it's a scenic hour-long journey there.
How to know you've arrived lol.
It's not my first time to Jiufen... I think it's my 3rd or 4th time there? But this is one of those places you can keep coming back and there'll be new things to see (and eat!) every single time.
And my absolute, absolute, absolute favourite is this ice cream dessert I always go back for.
It's where they'll put this freshly-grated peanut candy into this popiah skin, with yam ice cream and coriander (I know right???)...
It sounds a little strange but it tastes a whole lotta awesome. I've tried many versions of this around Taiwan but NONE of them tastes as good as this particular stall at Jiufen... it's either the ice cream from the other stalls lack that yam taste or that their peanut candy don't taste as fresh or the proportion of ingredients ain't done right... Just go for this seriously.
Me with my ice cream! Super love the Etude House lip tint recommended to me by Carrie - shade PK2 - it just STAYS!
And errr, more food haha.
This mochi was SO SO SO good we carted back boxes of it.
And then we reached the top of the hill/ mountain (?)
Keira's wearing the fan mail coat from CC!
Zach who took this photo says this is a "very emo, look like want to jump" shot lol.
I'm wearing the alphine coat!
Come mid-afternoon, we decided to have tea at the Jioufen Teahouse.
This 100-year-old wood and brick building at the far end of Jishan Street hosts what is reputedly the first teahouse in Jiufen.
We felt like we had stepped back in time and there's honestly quite nothing like sipping tea in winter to a view like that <3
More to come!
