Redefining my age and loving it!
If you could choose a number to define you, what would you choose?
I'd choose 30. Because finally at 30, after a decade of turbulence, I am truly content.
I am financially independent, with four businesses that I can be proud of; and above all, I found great love, with an even greater guy.
To be honest, this journey hasn't been the easiest.
I started my first business when I was 19. Back then web development was all the rage, so we jumped on the bandwagon. While it seemed lucrative, there were only so many hours in a day and that many projects you can take on. You either work till you drop dead, or ultimately, choose to cap your earnings. We eventually chose to let go of the business because well, life happened, and I got down to completing my university education.
Then came graduation.
I bought a one-way ticket to Bangkok, fell in love with the city, and decided that I wanted to live there a little longer. A month became three; six months became two years. We started ClubCouture and one thing led to another. Frustrated with the quality of suppliers in the market, we decided to BE our own supplier, so we moved into the production business, first for ourselves and eventually for others. We then started marketing ourselves to the US and Australia, and our Thai fashion designer friends in the industry wanted us to do it for them too, thus we expanded the business to cover fashion distribution. Recently, some friends saw what we were doing with our personal branding and after some talks over drinks, we decided to move into the area of social business solutions and media communication.
It sounds like I had a perfect life planned, but the truth is, the past 10 years has been one rollercoaster of a ride.
I was in Bangkok when the 2010 political riots happened and bullets were shot right through the windows of my apartment. (Sounds really dramatic in retrospect haha.)
There were many times I was left praying, that my client would make payment by midnight as promised, so I could pay my staff their salary; without having to borrow from my parents again - being a "boss" means having to pay everyone EXCEPT yourself.
I had to deal with my parents asking, "Are you sure this is working out?" whenever I called home. And while I reassured them with all my might that, yes, I knew what I was doing, truth be told, I actually didn't have much of a clue.
I went through many long nights (thank god for my Génifique eye cream), often wondering if I had indeed, made the right choice of not pursuing a banking career (after all, I did major in Economics…) My friends who went to school with me have successfully established their banking careers; many of them got married before me and at 30, are already mothers (some are even mothers of two or three!) while I on the other hand, am probably defying social conventions by not having a kid at my age.
But you know what?
I've come to realise that age shouldn’t define who we are. We’re more than just a number, and we are all beautiful because of how much we’ve accomplished - no matter what.
This is my story. What’s yours?
