So, you’ve taken the step to have revision rhinoplasty surgery. And just as you were previously advised of its inevitability, you were left with postoperative swelling. To you, the road to complete recovery may seem like very long a state-to-state highway. You are not alone; many people feel this same way after surgery. However, many are also turning to massaging techniques to help with recovery—if you would like to learn about the different techniques, this article could assist you on your journey to a happier you.
Why are massage techniques important?
As you may notice the swelling that comes post-operation, the swelling could cause scar tissue which can reshape the nose to an undesirable shape. With this in mind, these nasal exercises help to further shape the nose during your recovery process. The cast that is placed on the nose to keep the bones in their new resting spot, may typically be removed in 5-6 days. Due to bones being moved and cut, they are not solid—meaning they can have the tendency to drift back to the normal place until approximately the 8th-week post-surgery—when the bones have had time to form a more solid bond together.
How soon should I start exercises?
The first few weeks of recovery after the cast has been removed, it is recommended that you begin the exercises. This is very critical—especially if you or your doctor notice that the nose bone has drifted a bit due to swelling. If this is not caught before the bone heals completely which normally happens between 6-8 weeks, the bone in the nose will have to be broken. Yikes! But the great news for you is, there is nothing to be afraid of and you are not facing this alone. You will have your doctor to report all your concerns to, even after the operation.
What are the massage techniques?
There are different digital compression techniques that can be used if your nose bone has slightly shifted. You can use your two thumbs to press down on both sides. On the left side of your nose, you will use your left thumb to press down—you will do the same thing with your right side using your right thumb. It is very important to only apply pressure to the nose bone and not to push on the bridge (top) of the nose. Your thumb should be slightly below the bridge plane. It is usually recommended that the customer press down until they feel a little bit of pain to ensure that the exercise is making a difference. It is recommended to complete this technique up to 30 times per day. Sometimes it is not required to perform this exercise on both sides of the nose but more directly applied to the side that is leaving the desired position.
One method to help with scar tissue is to place the thumb and the index finger in a nose-pinching position. You may begin rubbing the nose bone inward in a circular motion. You will start at the top and work your way down—stopping where the bone ends. This will help to reduce any scar tissue that may have already formed from the swelling. To perform this, it may help you to be in front of a mirror so the motions are visible, but this is not required for the exercise to be effective.
For another technique, you may use both index fingers. For this exercise, you will place your right index finger on the right side of your nose. You will likewise place your left index finger on the left side of your nose. Once both fingers are on each side of the nose, you will move both fingers in a circular motion to the end of the nose bone. You can also start at the end of the nose bone, in a reverse motion. Before you begin, it is very important that you are following up with your doctor to be sure that these are the best practices to help you move forward in your recovery.
