Getting my acne scars lasered away by Dr Tyng Tan.
I spent my teenage years battling acne... while the zits were not the super scary volcanic type that covered my entire face, they were still BAD. Bad enough for my parents to send me to the National Skin Centre and my skin eventually cleared up after a prescription of doxycycline.
Then when I first moved to Bangkok, maybe it was the food, the water, the climate, the dust but my skin started acting up again. So much so that when I returned to Singapore for a visit, everyone was asking "What happened to your face?"
I later went to a pretty famous skin hospital in Bangkok and after some medication, thankfully my skin cleared up again.
But after these two bouts of acne, plus the fact that I scar really easily (seriously, I can't even scratch a mosquito bite without it scarring), to say that my complexion is imperfect is a severe understatement. Think, surface of the moon.
I still get my monthly zits when my period comes (ugh, women and our hormones) and even though I don't pick on them AT ALL (I swear!), they still leave behind ugly red marks that take FOREVER to fade.
When I was preparing for my wedding last year, I decided to start on laser treatments to get rid of these scars. So I returned to my trusty Bangkok hospital and endured through two sessions of laser. To be honest, because they hurt sooo freaking much, even though the results were pretty good, I did not continue the treatments after my wedding.
Especially these days with iPhone apps like Photo Wonder, smoothing your skin can easily be done with literally, a touch of a button.
However, I've realised that I cannot Photo Wonder pics of me that are taken at events and I HATE it when my face looks so bumpy in these event pics, I decided to get my skin lasered again, this time round at Dr. Tyng Tan's.
And a more scary close up shot...
You can also see that I have really large pores... which thankfully, this laser will also take care of.
The laser I did is called the MOSAIC Total Skin Regeneration and it can help with:
- Sun damaged skin
- Large pores
- Rough skin texture
- Uneven skin tone
As well as prevent new pimples. (I so need this! Sometimes I feel it's a never-ending cycle of fixing my skin if I keep having new zits that leave ugly scars!)
To be honest, I was terrified of the procedure after my last laser experience in Bangkok. In fact, just as we were about to begin the procedure I almost chickened out and asked Dr Tan if we could switch a non-laser procedure.
She explained that for my skin (and acne-scarred skin in general), this Mosaic procedure produces the best results.
And so, I gritted my teeth and asked for double layers of numbing cream and for the cream to be left on longer than usual, just in case.
It turns out that my worries were dumbfounded. As mentioned before, I have a really, really, REALLY low threshold for pain and in all honesty (cross my heart and hope to die!), this treatment was very very tolerable.
Also, everything was over really quickly in under two minutes.
My face felt a little hot after the procedure but the clinic will apply a cooling mask that really helps to calm the skin.
Right after laser
To be honest, as I have sensitive skin, my skin got quite red right after the treatment.
However, the redness lasted less than an hour.
In the meantime, I basically went around Takashimaya like that... getting ice cream from Azabu Sabo and buying my lunch from Teppei :joy:
And in the cab home...
Still a little red, but it's starting to subside!
There is minimal downtime for this procedure - makeup can be applied 3 to 4 hours after! Sooo different from the laser I did in Bangkok that had a downtime of almost a week!
Dr Tan will also prescribe a Post Treatment Balm for you to apply day and night for 5 days and I feel that this really helped to calm my skin and I really like its lightweight texture!
Few days after
The results were superb!
Every day I couldn't wait to look into the mirror when I wake up to see the difference with my skin.
This was taken with my iPhone right after waking up, before washing my face with zero edits.
You can see how much lighter the scars are now!
I honestly can't wait for my upcoming laser sessions so I can finally achieve perfectly clear skin again!

By the way, here's an update on my botox journey...
It's been 8 weeks since my procedure and the effects are supposed to be more visible now.
I have had people asking me "Hey did you lose weight?" hahaha because my face now looks slimmer and these days when I selfie, I don't bother with slimming my face in Photo Wonder anymore.
Like this picture taken at the recent Digital Fashion Week...
Now I no longer need to worry about having a fat face in photos :)
